Create a family communication plan so you can get in touch with family
members after a disaster. Give copies of contact information and meeting
locations to everyone in your family. Update emergency contact information
at work, day care facilities, and schools.
• Out-of-state contact
• Pay phones
• Cell phones
• Ham radios
Have an out-of-state contact for your family members. Long distance
lines do not go down from excess calls or phones falling off the hook.
These lines will be the first lines returned to service after a disaster.
Pay phones will be in service before residential lines.
Cell phones must use a cell site to connect calls. These cell sites
may not be operational after a disaster.
HAM radio is essential during disaster communications. The FCC has
lowered the requirements to become a licensed operator. Contact local
radio clubs listed in the yellow pages to become a HAM operator.
